The winter season calls for rest and that applies to our digestive systems too. Cooked, warm, nourishing foods are most appropriate, as well as reducing animal based products, will help give our digestion a break. Overall, the lack of light and the cold can take a toll on our energy - we feel less social and less inclined to be active. Making sure that we eat nourishing foods, move daily and get as much natural light as possible will help to keep us balanced.
My favourite breakfast at the moment is this delicious, grounding, Vata-balancing bowl of warm oats.
Here is the simple recipe:
Ingredients
organic oats
organic nuts of choice (I used cashews and pecans)
organic chia seeds
milk of choice
spices: ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg (you can also use cardamom, vanilla, ...)
1/2 a banana
a handful of berries (I used raspberries)
cold pressed, organic, unrefined coconut oil (totally optional but delicious)
organic tahini (or any other nut butter)
blackstrap molasses (substitute for dates - in which case you will add them chopped at the same time as the fruits)
Toast* a handful of each oats, nuts and chia seeds in a non-stick pan for 2 mins. Add the spices (a pinch of each) and toast for a further 2-3mins. Add the cut banana, berries and milk. Let cook for about 5mins, if the milk evaporates, add more. Once cooked you want it to still be creamy and milky - not dry. Poor in a bowl and add your tahini, coconut oil and blackstrap molasses on top.
Enjoy! :)
*Toasting your oats, nuts and spices in the beginning will make them more digestible and will reveal the flavours of the spices.
